The Republican Party of Virginia issued a fraud alert regarding Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s statements about lowering power bills, citing her administration’s decision to rejoin the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
The party said the governor is claiming to address power bill affordability while her decision to rejoin the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative adds an estimated $500 million annual carbon tax on electricity. The issue centers on recent legislative and budget actions signed earlier this year that led to Virginia’s reentry into the initiative, according to a post by the official party account on X.
The alert responded to recent interview remarks by Gov. Spanberger that pointed to balcony solar and battery storage legislation as steps toward energy affordability.
According to the Virginia Mercury, residential customers in Dominion Energy territory previously faced average monthly increases of about four dollars due to participation in the program before its pause. Reentering the initiative is projected to reinstate similar charges estimated at around $2 per month initially for residential accounts.
The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative allowance prices increased during Virginia’s prior participation, with the state collecting more than $828 million through auctions before withdrawing. The Thomas Jefferson Institute, a conservative policy group, estimates that rejoining at current price levels would add roughly $500 million in annual electricity costs statewide.
The Republican Party of Virginia serves as the official state affiliate of the national Republican Party. Headquartered in Richmond, the organization coordinates activities across the Commonwealth to support Republican values and voter engagement at the state and local levels, according to the organization.
