Representative John McGuire announced on May 21 the passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act in the House of Representatives.
The bill is designed to address ongoing challenges in housing affordability and supply across the country. Lawmakers say it aims to make homeownership more accessible, especially for veterans and families facing financial obstacles.
“The American Dream of homeownership has been out of reach for far too long,” said Rep. John McGuire (VA-05). “The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act eliminates barriers, eases financial burdens, and creates better pathways for veterans’ housing assistance. This bill proves once again that House Republicans are committed to making life more affordable for Americans. I was proud to vote for its passage and look forward to continuing to fight for all Americans to achieve the American Dream.”
According to information released with the announcement, the House amendment to H.R. 6644 seeks reforms such as expanding housing supply, reducing regulatory barriers, modernizing federal housing programs, and improving affordability. The legislation includes provisions intended to streamline zoning and permitting processes, encourage innovative construction methods including manufactured homes, update rural development programs, and expand access to affordable financing options.
Other measures within the act focus on strengthening protections for veterans, homeowners, renters, and families receiving federal assistance while also improving coordination among federal agencies responsible for housing policy. Increased oversight and transparency are also highlighted as key components.
Additionally, several sections aim at enhancing community banks’ ability to support mortgage lending by providing them with diverse sources of low-cost funding suitable for facilitating home construction financing.
