Paving work is ongoing for northbound Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County, affecting the stretch between exit 191 (I-64 junction) and exit 195 (Route 11). Initially set to finish by June 12, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has extended the completion date to June 30 due to weather and contractor delays. The construction schedule runs from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Thursday nights, and from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Sunday nights, with no planned work on Friday or Saturday nights.
During construction near the I-64/I-81 junction, expect overnight closures of the ramp from eastbound I-64 onto northbound I-81. This ramp merges onto I-81 from the left lane near mile marker 192. Eastbound I-64 motorists needing access to northbound I-81 will be detoured via I-64 exit 56 onto southbound I-81, continuing for three miles to exit 188A. They should then merge onto eastbound Route 60 (East Midland Trail) and follow detour signs to enter northbound I-81 at the same interchange.
Additionally, there will be nighttime and overnight lane closures on northbound I-81 throughout this paving operation. All activities are contingent upon favorable weather conditions.
