The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in collaboration with Gloucester County, is requesting public input on transportation studies that aim to evaluate potential improvements at two locations within the county. Residents and travelers are encouraged to participate by completing an online survey available until Wednesday, May 21.
The first study location includes Route 17 from McFadden Way/Hospital Drive to Belroi Road and Route 17 Business (Main Street) between Route 17 and Justice Drive. The second focuses on Route 17 from Featherbed Lane to Guinea Road. These studies intend to propose recommendations that could enhance safety, operations, access, and features for bicyclists and pedestrians in these areas.
These efforts are part of the Project Pipeline program, initiated by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Project Pipeline is a performance-based planning initiative designed to identify cost-effective solutions for Virginia’s multimodal transportation needs. The program is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI), alongside VDOT and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).
The studies for both Route 17 locations in Gloucester County can be viewed on the Project Pipeline study pages. They are scheduled for completion in summer 2026 but do not establish construction timelines for any proposed improvements. Instead, they will suggest projects, solutions, and investment strategies that may qualify for funding through statewide programs like SMART SCALE, Revenue Sharing, and the Virginia Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), as well as regional and local funding sources.
Surveys include a translation tool for various languages. Comments may also be sent by mail to Ms. Rachel Inman at the Virginia Department of Transportation, located at 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405.
