The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in collaboration with Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, Culpeper County, and the Town of Culpeper, is inviting public feedback on transportation studies. These studies aim to assess potential improvements to several transportation corridors within these localities.

The focus areas include enhancing safety, reducing congestion, improving accessibility and connectivity for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit users, as well as addressing transportation demand management needs.

VDOT encourages residents and travelers to participate by learning more about the studies and completing online surveys available through provided links. The input collected will help identify existing issues along the study corridors and aid in developing recommendations for potential improvements. These recommendations will be evaluated and presented during a subsequent phase that will also offer another opportunity for public comment.

The four corridors under study are:

– U.S. 29/250 Bypass in Albemarle County from the Ivy Road interchange to south of the Interstate 64 interchange.
– U.S. 29 corridor in Culpeper County from the Madison County line to the U.S. 29 Business interchange.
– 5th Street corridor in Albemarle County and Charlottesville from Pinehurst Court to Harris Road.
– Ira Hoffman Lane in the Town of Culpeper and Culpeper County from Route 229 (Rixeyville Road) to U.S. 15 Business (Brandy Road).

Surveys can be accessed via specific links provided for each study corridor. Comments may also be directed to Chuck Proctor, Culpeper District Planner, via email at Charles.Proctor@VDOT.Virginia.gov or postal mail at Virginia Department of Transportation, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701. Survey responses will be accepted until June 16.

These studies are part of Project Pipeline—a performance-based planning program established by the Commonwealth Transportation Board—to identify cost-effective solutions for multimodal transportation needs across Virginia. The initiative is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment alongside VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation.

Completion of these studies is anticipated by summer 2026. They will propose projects, solutions, and investment strategies that could qualify for statewide funding programs such as SMART SCALE or regional/local funding sources; however, no construction dates have been set yet.
