The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is set to hold a public hearing on May 21, 2025, regarding the proposed replacement of the Route 58 bridge over Interstate 95 in Emporia. The meeting will take place at Golden Leaf Commons from 4 to 6 p.m.
The project plans involve replacing the current four-lane bridge with two new concrete span bridges. Additional improvements are planned for the roadway and ramps on Route 58 between Purdy Road/Wiggins Road and Market Drive. This initiative aims to update infrastructure and enhance safety by reducing potential overheight vehicle strikes. The new bridges will increase vertical clearance by 22 inches, providing a minimum clearance of 16 feet 11 inches for vehicles on I-95.
According to VDOT, “The purpose of the location and design public hearing is to give the public an opportunity to review various project exhibits on display, meet with VDOT representatives, and provide input that may shape the final design.” The meeting will follow an open-house format without formal presentations. Media representatives are welcome to attend.
Attendees can submit oral or written comments during the hearing or send them by May 31, 2025, to Stacey Burrows, P.E., Project Manager at VDOT. Comments can also be emailed with “Route 58 Bridge over I-95 Replacement Project Comment” as the subject line.
