The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold two public hearings on December 2, 2025, to discuss proposed plans for safety improvement projects along Route 460 in Wakefield. The events will take place at the Wakefield Foundation from 4 to 6 p.m.
One project, the Route 460 East Right-Turn Lane Project, aims to improve safety and visibility at the intersection of Route 460 and Route 628 (West Main Street). Plans include adding a channelized right-turn lane with a larger turning radius for trucks, as well as new pedestrian features such as a refuge island, crosswalks, and audible signals.
The second project, known as the Route 460 Pedestrian Improvements Project, proposes installing a pedestrian hybrid beacon between Route 714 (Jeb White Street/High Street) and Sussex Avenue. This is intended to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the busy road at a midblock location. Additional improvements include building about 300 feet of sidewalk along the west side of Route 460 and marking pedestrian crossings across Route 714.
The public hearing will be conducted in an open-house format without formal presentations. Attendees can review project displays, speak with VDOT representatives, and offer feedback on either project. Media are also invited to attend.
If severe weather occurs on December 2, the event will be rescheduled for December 9 at the same time and location.
Written or oral comments may be provided during the hearing or submitted by mail to VDOT’s Suffolk office or via email until December 12, 2025. Comments regarding the East Right-Turn Lane Project should be sent to Mr. Daniel Baum at Daniel.Baum@VDOT.Virginia.gov with “Route 460 East Right-Turn Lane Project Comment” in the subject line. Comments about the Pedestrian Improvements Project should go to Mrs. Stacey Burrows at Stacey.Burrows@VDOT.Virginia.gov with “Route 460 Pedestrian Improvements Project Comment” in the subject line.
