The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is inviting public input on a proposed project to reconstruct two intersections on Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg. The plan includes changes at Kenmore Avenue and Charles Street, as well as converting Prince Edward Street to a one-way street between Wolfe Street and Kenmore Avenue.
An in-person design public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at the Walker-Grant Center located at 210 Ferdinand Street in Fredericksburg. In case an alternate date is necessary, the hearing will be held on July 9, 2025, at the same time and location.
VDOT staff will present details shortly after the meeting begins and will remain available until 7 p.m. to address any questions from attendees. Project materials can be accessed online for review, and comments may be submitted through an online survey.
Comments are welcome during the public hearing and until Saturday, July 5. Feedback can also be emailed to fred.comments@vdot.virginia.gov with “Lafayette and Kenmore Improvements” as the subject line or mailed directly to Mr. Byrd Holloway, VDOT Senior Project Manager.
The proposed $7.1 million project aims to remove the traffic signal from Lafayette Boulevard and Kenmore Avenue intersection, allowing Lafayette Boulevard traffic to flow freely while making Kenmore Avenue stop-controlled. Prince Edward Street would transition to one-way between Kenmore Avenue and Wolfe Street. Additionally, improvements include replacing the traffic signal at Lafayette Boulevard and Charles Street with other enhancements such as curb modifications, sidewalks, a shared use path, storm sewer upgrades, lighting installation, pavement markings, signs, crosswalks with advance warning signs.
During construction phases of this initiative designed to improve safety and optimize traffic operations for both vehicles and pedestrians within these areas certain road sections may close temporarily with detour routes provided accordingly.
This project was submitted by Fredericksburg under Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation program aiming for better infrastructure solutions across different regions of the state.
