The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 27 that the public is invited to provide feedback on a proposed project to build bicycle and pedestrian facilities along Route 1 in the City of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County.

The initiative aims to improve access for cyclists and pedestrians between Harrison Road in Spotsylvania County and Idlewild Boulevard in Fredericksburg. The proposal includes a shared use path, sidewalks, share-the-road signs, pavement markings, a new pedestrian bridge over Hazel Run parallel to Route 1, and updated crossing signals at Kings Mill Drive and Idlewild Boulevard.

An in-person design public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5 from 5-7 p.m. at Lafayette Elementary School in Fredericksburg. If needed, a backup session will be held Thursday, May 7 at the same time and location. Attendees can review displays, discuss plans with Virginia Department of Transportation staff, and submit comments during the event or afterwards through Saturday, May 16 by email or mail.

According to the official website, the purpose of Virginia Department of Transportation centers on building, maintaining and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges and tunnels to support a safe and efficient transportation system. The agency manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems with tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to its official website. Services provided include highway maintenance; traffic management through systems like Virginia 511; oversight of land-use permits along state routes; as well as planning, construction, and maintenance responsibilities for roadways statewide according to its official website.

Virginia Department of Transportation developed from the State Highway Commission formed in 1906 through various iterations as it took responsibility for managing an expanding transportation infrastructure according to its official website. The agency’s headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to its official website.

This project reflects ongoing efforts by state agencies such as VDOT to enhance safety options for non-motorized travelers while supporting community input into major infrastructure decisions.
