The Prince George County Board of Supervisors adopted a new policy on April 28 regarding signs on county-owned property. The measure aims to support public safety, maintain access to government facilities, and avoid confusion about whether unattended signs represent the views of the local government.

The new rules matter because they set clear guidelines for where and when signs can be placed, helping keep public spaces safe and accessible. The policy currently applies to the County Government Complex.

Under the updated regulations, unattended signs are generally not allowed on county property unless they are official county signs or fall under a limited exception related to elections. According to the board, this approach is intended “to help keep sidewalks, parking areas, and other public spaces clear, maintain sight lines for drivers and pedestrians, and reduce the risk of signs becoming hazards or litter.” The policy also clarifies that it does not restrict residents from assembling peacefully or expressing their views as long as those activities do not interfere with services or create safety concerns.

A designated area near the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at the Administrative Office has been established as a limited public forum specifically for election-related signage. This exception includes specific restrictions regarding timeframes, placement locations, sign sizes, and requirements that all election-related signage be removed after voting concludes. Enforcement will be managed by the County Administrator or a designee; any unauthorized signs may be removed if placed outside permitted areas or time periods.

In addition to governance matters like this new sign policy, education remains an important aspect of community life in Prince George County. During the 2023-24 school year, the Prince George County Public Schools District enrolled 6,181 students. Prince George High School had 1,818 students enrolled, making it the largest among seven schools in the district during that period.

Enrollment data shows that white students were the largest ethnic group in local schools with 2,765 students (44.7%), followed by Black students with 1,880 (30.4%). Overall enrollment grew slightly—up by 1.2% from last year’s total of 6,106—reflecting modest growth in student numbers across county schools.

At North Elementary School,46 pre-kindergarten students were enrolled during 2023-24, representing more than a quarter of all pre-kindergarteners in Prince George County.North Elementary also had most kindergarteners enrolled at 119 children (25% of all kindergarteners).

Looking ahead, officials say enforcement efforts will focus on ensuring compliance with these guidelines while supporting both free expression and safe access to public facilities.
