The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation has named Portsmouth Public Schools a Best Communities for Music Education award winner, according to an April 24 announcement. The award recognizes school districts and individual schools across the country for their leadership in advancing music education and expanding equitable access for all students, according to NAMM.

The recognition highlights the importance of music education in schools. It acknowledges the efforts made by educators and communities to provide students with opportunities in music, which can foster creativity, discipline, collaboration, and confidence.

“We know that music education is essential for today’s students,” said Dr. Elie Bracy, III, Superintendent of Portsmouth Public Schools. “It nurtures creativity, discipline, collaboration and confidence. As such, we are incredibly proud to be recognized among the best in the nation. This outstanding honor reflects the passion and dedication of our music educators as well as the unwavering support of our community. We will build on this momentum to expand opportunities and ensure music remains a defining strength of our division.”

To be selected for this honor, NAMM evaluates criteria such as participation rates in music programs, teacher qualifications, standards used to assess student learning in music education, budget considerations and awareness of available electives within schools.

Portsmouth Public Schools offers various programs at both elementary and secondary levels including chorus, band, steel pans ensemble, orchestra, dance classes as well as a travel performance group called Porte Towne Magic.

Further information about the Best Communities for Music Education award can be found on the NAMM Foundation website. Details about Portsmouth Public Schools’ performing arts offerings are available at ppsk12.us.
