The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on April 3 that Popes Head Road in Fairfax will experience one lane of alternating traffic controlled by flaggers on weekdays from April 7 through April 28. The lane closure, which will take place between Revercomb Court and Fairfax County Parkway, is due to water main relocation work as part of the ongoing interchange project at Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road.

This work is scheduled for several periods: from Tuesday, April 7 through Friday, April 10; Monday, April 13 through Friday, April 17; Monday, April 20 through Friday, April 24; and Monday and Tuesday, April 27-28. Each day’s closure will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drivers are advised to expect delays and consider alternate routes during these times.

The interchange project aims to replace the current traffic signal at the intersection with a new design featuring triple roundabouts and two bridges over Fairfax County Parkway. Additional improvements include building a segment of the future Shirley Gate Road extension for access to Patriot Park, constructing a shared-use path linking existing trails with Patriot Park, reconstructing the Fairfax County Parkway Trail, installing a sidewalk along Popes Head Road’s north side, and extending Ladues End Lane to connect with the new roundabout.

According to the official website, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating roads across Virginia as part of its mission to support safe transportation. VDOT manages one of the largest state highway systems in the country—spanning tens of thousands of lane-miles—and provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management using tools like Virginia’s statewide travel information system.

VDOT oversees planning and construction throughout Virginia’s road network from its headquarters in Richmond at East Broad Street. The agency traces its origins back more than a century when it began as the State Highway Commission in 1906 before evolving into its current form according to official records.

Drivers are reminded by VDOT officials that caution should be used when traveling near active work zones due to changing patterns or possible distractions. Traffic updates are available online via 511Virginia, through their mobile app or by calling “511” within Virginia.
