The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a planned electrical outage for the I-66 Rosslyn Tunnel. The outage is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m., weather permitting. This measure aims to integrate new tunnel lighting with the existing system as part of ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
During this period, the tunnel will be without working lighting. VDOT advises drivers to exercise caution and ensure their headlights are on when traveling through the area.
The I-66 Rosslyn Tunnel rehabilitation project involves several enhancements. These include removing the tunnel ceiling for better maintenance, replacing loose or damaged ceiling tiles, upgrading electrical systems, installing a new fireproofing system, repairing steel beams and concrete structures, cleaning bearings, and replacing the lighting system. Built in 1983, the tunnel spans nearly a fifth of a mile under North Nash Street, Fort Myer Drive, North Lynn Street, and Gateway Park.
The project’s completion is anticipated this summer. Drivers should remain vigilant in active work zones by staying alert to new traffic patterns and minimizing distractions.
