George Mason University announced on April 25 that its women’s softball team split a doubleheader against conference leader Loyola Chicago at the GMU Softball Complex. The Patriots won the first game 10-4, powered by a six-run fifth inning and a grand slam from senior Logan Pickford, but dropped the second game 3-1.

The event also served as Senior Day for George Mason, with six graduating players honored before the games: Tess Altevers Harris, Harlowe Nigh, Kamryn Inman, Logan Pickford, Elyssa DeRosa, and Kaleigh Friend.

In the opening matchup, Maddie Lemasters and Abbey Lane helped put George Mason ahead early. After Loyola closed the gap in the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Abbie Gregus, George Mason responded decisively in the fifth. Madeline Staats scored on a single from Lemasters before Pickford delivered her team’s first grand slam of the season. Lane pitched a complete game for George Mason and contributed offensively as well. “Abbey Lane pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs on seven hits,” according to information released by George Mason University.

The second contest saw Loyola take an early lead with runs in each of the first two innings. Alyssa Hopkins hit a solo home run for George Mason in the fourth inning—her third consecutive multi-hit game—but it was not enough to close the deficit. Bri Lencz started for George Mason and allowed three runs over nearly seven innings.

The series will conclude Sunday at noon when both teams meet again at GMU Softball Complex. The final matchup will be streamed live on ESPN+.
