The George Mason Patriots baseball team defeated George Washington University 8-5 in the middle game of their series on Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field, according to a May 2 announcement.
The win was secured after the Patriots scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, overcoming a late deficit. This result is significant for both teams as they continue conference play and jockey for position in the standings.
Freshman second baseman Jackson Morse led George Mason with three hits and two runs scored. Sophomore left fielder Lucas Alberti contributed two hits, two runs batted in, and one run scored. Graduate student catcher Logan Vaughan added two hits—including his second home run of the season—and drove in two runs. The Patriots trailed early after George Washington took a lead through scoring plays by Jack Kent and Charlie Walsh but narrowed the gap with Vaughan’s solo home run in the fourth inning.
George Mason rallied further by sending eight batters to the plate during a three-run sixth inning. Drew Canody drove in a run with a single, while Alberti added a crucial two-run single. Despite giving up back-to-back solo home runs to lose their lead temporarily, the Patriots regained control during an eighth-inning surge that included walks from Morse, Alberti, and Luciano Terilli; an RBI walk from Matthew Westley; and key contributions from Evan Blanchard and Vaughan.
Pitcher Jake Drumm allowed three runs—two earned—over six innings for George Mason while striking out six batters. Owen Stewart (4-4) earned the win after pitching effectively over multiple innings. For George Washington, Max Haug gave up four runs on eleven hits over nearly six innings pitched.
The series will conclude Sunday at Spuhler Field with first pitch scheduled for noon.
