The George Mason baseball team will play its last midweek game of the season against William & Mary on May 5, with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg, Virginia.
This matchup is significant as it marks the end of George Mason’s non-conference weekday schedule before they continue their Atlantic 10 Conference slate. The Patriots currently hold a record of 22-23 overall and 13-11 in conference play, while William & Mary stands at 20-25 overall and 11-13 in Coastal Athletic Association games.
George Mason leads the all-time series between the two teams, with a record of 65-43 dating back to 1978. Last season, the Patriots won both meetings against William & Mary, including an eight-to-seven victory in Williamsburg on May 7, and a twelve-to-one win earlier that year. Before those wins, William & Mary had taken ten straight from George Mason.
Several players have stood out for George Mason this season. Senior shortstop Owen Clyne was named a semifinalist for the College Baseball Foundation’s Brooks Wallace Award honoring the nation’s top shortstop. Clyne has started all forty-five games and leads his team in hits (57), triples (3), total bases (88), RBI (37), runs scored (44), walks (31), on-base percentage (.431) and slugging percentage (.509). Graduate student outfielder Luciano Terilli leads with a .337 batting average, while sophomore Lucas Alberti tops home runs with six. Freshman Julius Bagnerise is tied for twenty-eighth nationally in stolen bases with twenty-seven.
William & Mary’s standout player is sophomore infielder Jamie Laskofski who leads his team in several categories including batting average (.379) and stolen bases (29). The Tribe recently dropped two out of three games to Elon but will look to rebound during their own final midweek contests before closing their regular season.
George Mason’s roster features thirteen returners and nineteen newcomers under fourth-year head coach Shawn Camp. The team’s schedule includes fifty-five games this year—thirty against conference rivals—and features matchups against teams that appeared in last year’s NCAA Regionals.
