The George Mason Patriots lost to No. 23 Virginia, 5-1, on Tuesday night at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville, Va., according to an April 28 announcement.

The game saw the Patriots (19-23, 10-11 Atlantic 10) take an early lead in the third inning when junior catcher Vincent Cowdrey singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Jackson Morse. However, Virginia (30-16, 12-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) responded quickly with a solo home run from junior Joe Tiroly in the bottom of the third.

Virginia gained momentum in the fourth inning as sophomore Zach Jackson was hit by a pitch, advanced on a balk and stolen base, then scored on a sacrifice bunt. The Cavaliers continued to add runs with back-to-back doubles in the fifth and a two-run double by Jake Weatherspoon in the seventh.

For George Mason, starting pitcher Tanner Kaler allowed two runs over four innings and took the loss. Shaun Okeeffe gave up one run in relief during the fifth inning. Carter Kelsey pitched a scoreless sixth inning while Aiden Parker surrendered two runs over two innings of work.

On offense for George Mason, Matthew Westley went two-for-four at bat while Cowdrey was one-for-three with a run scored. Morse recorded his eighth RBI of the season.

Looking ahead, George Mason will host George Washington for a three-game Atlantic 10 series beginning Friday at Spuhler Field.
