The Patriots baseball team secured a three-game sweep over George Washington with a 6-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field, according to a May 3 announcement.

This series win is significant for the Patriots as they tallied 30 runs on 42 hits across the three games and maintained consistent offensive pressure by putting at least one runner on base in all but one inning of the series.

Sophomore left fielder Lucas Alberti contributed two hits, an RBI, and scored twice. Senior shortstop Owen Clyne also recorded two hits and scored two runs. Junior first baseman Matthew Westley drove in two runs. The Patriots took an early lead in the first inning when Luciano Terilli brought home Clyne with a sacrifice bunt. In the second inning, Jake Butler scored after leading off with a single and later coming home on Logan Vaughan’s sacrifice bunt.

George Washington responded in the fourth inning by scoring three runs to take a brief lead. However, Alberti tied the game for George Mason in the fifth after being hit by a pitch, stealing second base, and scoring on Westley’s single. The Patriots regained control in the seventh inning when singles from Jackson Morse and Clyne set up another RBI from Alberti. Sacrifice flies from Westley and Butler extended their advantage to 6-3.

In relief pitching efforts, Diego Cardenas earned his fourth win of the season despite allowing two runs over 3.2 innings while Logan Rumberg closed out the ninth for his first save of the year. For George Washington, Declan Wywoda took his fourth loss after giving up six runs over six innings.

Looking ahead, George Mason will travel to face William & Mary for their final midweek game of the season on Tuesday evening.
