Travelers using Route 1 near the Falmouth Bridge in Fredericksburg should prepare for overnight delays next week as crews work to remove overhead signs. The work will take place between the intersection of Route 218 (Butler Road)/Route 17 Business (Warrenton Road) in Stafford County and the Hanson Avenue and Princess Anne Street intersection.

Starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, alternating single lane closures will be in effect. Between midnight and 6 a.m., all traffic on Route 1 will be stopped in intervals of up to 15 minutes to allow for sign removal. Emergency vehicles will be allowed through the work zone and across the Falmouth Bridge during this time.

If additional time is needed, lane closures may also occur starting at 10 p.m. Friday, March 13, ending by 6 a.m. Saturday, March 14.

The removal of these signs is part of the Route 1, Hanson Avenue, Princess Anne intersection safety project. This $1.6 million federal Highway Safety Improvement Program project includes modifying an existing median on southbound Route 1 to provide more space for vehicles turning left onto Princess Anne Street after crossing the Falmouth Bridge. Additional pedestrian accommodations have been installed for crossing Route 1. A temporary concrete median at Hanson Avenue and Route 1 has been replaced with a permanent concrete curb and island. Left turns from northbound Route 1 onto Hanson Avenue remain prohibited.

The project is expected to be completed by June 2026.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which oversees this project, is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels to support safe and efficient transportation across the state (official website). VDOT manages one of the largest state highway systems in the country, covering tens of thousands of lane-miles (official website). The agency also provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511 (official website).

VDOT’s headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond (official website).
