Overnight paving on southbound I-495 in the Tysons-McLean area is scheduled to continue through Friday morning, June 27, until approximately noon. Multiple lanes will be closed in both directions starting at 9:30 p.m. tonight and will reopen by 5 a.m. Friday morning. A single right lane will remain closed in the southbound direction from about 5 a.m. until noon. Motorists are advised to anticipate possible delays and plan for additional travel time.

The paving work and subsequent lane closure are necessary to prepare the road for a major traffic shift planned for overnight hours tomorrow night, weather permitting.

On Friday night, June 27, crews will initiate the first of two traffic shifts on southbound I-495 within the 495 NEXT project area. This initial phase involves shifting lanes from just north of George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to just south of Georgetown Pike onto newly constructed lanes on the outer section of the highway. Saturday and Sunday nights are reserved as backup dates in case of bad weather or other delays.

Following this shift, drivers will have two separate exits from southbound I-495 to access Exit 43 for GWMP and Exit 44 for Georgetown Pike, instead of using the existing collector-distributor road.

During this first traffic shift scheduled from Friday night, June 27, through Saturday morning, June 28:

Traffic on all four general-purpose lanes of southbound I-495 from just north of GWMP to just south of Georgetown Pike will move onto new outer lanes.

A single mobile lane closure begins at 8 p.m., with a second lane closing at 9 p.m., followed by three total lane closures by 10 p.m., between GWMP and Lewinsville Road.

One lane on I-495 will remain open except during intermittent total stoppages or slow-roll operations between midnight and 5 a.m., assisted by police directing motorists.

Lanes start reopening at 6 a.m. on Saturday with all four lanes realigned by 10 a.m.

Additionally, ramps connecting southbound I-495 with GWMP (Exit 43) and Georgetown Pike (Exit 44), along with corresponding ramps back to I-495, will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday.

If rescheduled for Saturday night due to delays, closures begin at 8 p.m., with full reopening by Sunday at 10 a.m.; if postponed further to Sunday night, reopening occurs no later than Monday at 6 a.m.

The second phase of shifting Beltway lanes is tentatively set for Friday night, July 11. It covers the stretch from south of Georgetown Pike to north of the Dulles Corridor Interchange near Old Dominion Drive. Northbound I-495 lanes were shifted earlier in May as part of these adjustments needed for constructing new Express Lanes within the Beltway’s center portion.
