Route 3 travelers will face overnight lane closures on the Robert O. Norris Bridge between Lancaster and Middlesex counties from Monday, August 4 through Wednesday, August 6. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that the bridge will be reduced to a single lane each night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., with work concluding on the morning of Thursday, August 7.
Automated flagging devices will be used to manage traffic flow during these hours. According to VDOT, “Flagging crew members operate the devices, which can be adjusted to respond to congestion or incidents on the bridge.”
The lane closures are part of a $7.1 million maintenance project focused on replacing or strengthening portions of the bridge’s structural steel. This effort is intended to keep the Norris Bridge in service as preliminary engineering continues for a future replacement project. Structural steel repairs are expected to finish by September 2026.
VDOT noted that all scheduled work is weather dependent. Travelers can find updates about this work zone at 511Virginia, download the free mobile app, or call 511 from any phone in Virginia.
