Drivers on the U.S. 29/250 Bypass in Albemarle County should prepare for overnight delays from Tuesday night, May 6, into Wednesday morning, May 7. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled work to replace the Route 601 (Old Ivy Road) bridge during this time.

From 9 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday, the left inside lanes of the bypass will be closed in both directions between Route 654 (Barracks Road) and U.S. 29 Business (Fontaine Avenue). As midnight approaches, temporary traffic stoppages lasting approximately 15 minutes will occur to facilitate the removal of a beam from the Route 601 bridge.

Flagging teams will manage eastbound traffic on Route 601 as beams are removed. Drivers are advised to expect delays and follow all traffic controls while reducing speed when nearing and passing through the work zone.

The Old Ivy Road bridge, built in 1961, is being replaced due to structural deficiencies. The project commenced on February 3 and is anticipated to conclude by July 2026. Further details about the project can be found on VDOT’s website at vdot.virginia.gov/projects/culpeper-district/route-601-old-ivy-road-albemarle-county.

Updates regarding conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are available on X.com/VaDOTCulp and their Facebook page.

Real-time travel information, including current traffic conditions and access to VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras, can be accessed via the 511Virginia website or through the free VDOT 511 mobile app. Information is also obtainable by calling 511 from any phone within Virginia.
