Route 3 travelers should prepare for overnight delays on the Robert O. Norris Bridge between Lancaster and Middlesex counties this week due to a maintenance project. Starting Thursday, July 24 through Saturday, July 26, the bridge over the Rappahannock River will have one-way alternating traffic with a single travel lane from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., and on Friday night through Saturday morning from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Automated flagging devices will manage traffic in the work zone, operated by flagging crew members who can adjust them according to congestion or incidents on the bridge.
The $7.1 million maintenance project aims to replace or strengthen parts of the bridge’s structural steel. This is part of efforts to maintain the Norris Bridge while preliminary engineering continues for a separate replacement project. The bridge remains safe for travelers under its current 45-ton weight limit.
Weather permitting, all structural steel repairs are expected to be completed by September 2026. Updates are available on 511Virginia, and travelers can also use the free mobile app or call 511 within Virginia.
