Contractor crews working with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will carry out an overnight full closure on I-264 east in Chesapeake and Portsmouth to install overhead signage. The closure is set to begin as early as January 8, starting at 11 p.m. and ending at 5 a.m., affecting all lanes between the I-64 Bowers Hill interchange (exit 15A) in Chesapeake and Greenwood Drive (exit 2) in Portsmouth.

During this period, two left lanes from I-664 south to I-264 east and the ramp from I-64 east to I-264 east will also be closed. Detours will guide motorists: those traveling on I-664 south are directed to take I-64 west (exit 15B) to Military Highway (exit 297), then follow Military Highway to Cavalier Boulevard and Greenwood Drive for access back onto I-264 east. Motorists on I-64 east should exit at Military Highway (exit 297), proceed along Military Highway, Cavalier Boulevard, and Greenwood Drive to re-enter I-264 east.

A backup date of January 11 has been set if needed. VDOT noted that “all work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.”

The Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for planning, building, and maintaining roads, bridges, and tunnels throughout Virginia. The agency manages one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the United States and provides services such as traffic management through systems like Virginia 511.

VDOT’s responsibilities include ensuring safe transportation infrastructure across the state while offering public access to road condition data and overseeing land-use permits along state routes. Its headquarters are located in Richmond.
