Old Dominion University head men’s basketball coach Mike Jones announced on Apr. 23 the addition of Orlando Vandross to the Monarchs’ coaching staff.
Vandross will serve as an assistant coach and take on responsibilities related to recruiting for the men’s basketball program. The appointment comes as Old Dominion prepares for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
“I am very excited to welcome Coach Vandross to Old Dominion and the 757,” Jones said. “He will be a great addition as we transition to the 2026-27 season and brings elite-level winning, player development, and building strong relationships. He will have an immediate impact on our program.”
Vandross brings extensive experience in recruiting and player development from his previous roles at various collegiate programs. Most recently, he served ten years with Virginia’s men’s basketball team, initially as Director of Recruiting/Player Development before moving into an assistant coach position. During his tenure with Virginia under Coach Tony Bennett, he contributed to a national championship win in 2019 and an Elite Eight appearance in 2016.
Prior to Virginia, Vandross spent five seasons as an assistant at Charlotte from 2011-15, where he helped guide the team to victories at both the Great Alaska Shootout (2013) and Puerto Rico Tip-Off (2014), along with a bid to the National Invitation Tournament in 2013. He also worked thirteen years at Boston University—including three seasons as associate head coach—where he assisted in leading four postseason appearances: one NCAA Tournament berth and three NIT trips.
In his new role at Old Dominion, Vandross is expected to oversee all aspects of recruiting efforts for the Monarchs’ program.
