The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on May 22 that Old Wheatland Road (Route 698) in Waterford will have one lane of alternating traffic via flagging beginning on or about June 5. The affected area is between Milltown Road (Route 681) and Rosemont Farm Place, and the work will take place on weekdays.

Flagging operations are scheduled Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the summer months along an approximately one-mile segment of Old Wheatland Road. In addition to lane restrictions, there will be temporary traffic stoppages lasting up to 15 minutes during these hours each weekday.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and consider alternate routes while the road work is underway. The project is part of VDOT’s Rural Rustic Road Program, which seeks to preserve the traditional character of rural roads while making surface improvements within the existing right of way.

According to the official website, Virginia Department of Transportation manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems, provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversees planning, construction, and maintenance for roads across Virginia.

The road work is expected to be completed by late August. Drivers are reminded by VDOT to use caution when traveling in active work zones, remain alert for new traffic patterns, and limit distractions.
