Old Dominion University women’s tennis team defeated Arkansas State 4-1 in the Sun Belt Conference semifinals on April 25 in Rome, Georgia. The Monarchs’ victory secures their place in the conference finals, where they will compete for a sixth consecutive championship.
The match began with doubles play, where Ulyana Romanova and Lidiia Rasskouskaia claimed a 6-1 win over Hanmare McAslin and Helena Bueno on court three. Kira Matushkina and Victoria Matasova followed with a 6-3 victory against Lilly Cvanciger and Carla Muro Castellvi on court one, giving Old Dominion the doubles point. The third doubles match was suspended with Marina Markina and Uladzislava Manzhos trailing Sarah Millard and Anna Grigoreva.
In singles action, Romanova defeated McAslin 6-2, 6-1 to open play. Rasskouskaia extended Old Dominion’s lead by winning her match against Meghna Arun Kumar in straight sets. Although Cvanciger earned Arkansas State’s only point by defeating Matasova, Markina clinched the overall victory for Old Dominion with a straight-set win over Millard on court six.
Two singles matches were left unfinished: Matushkina led Grigoreva while Manzhos was ahead of Muro Castellvi when play stopped. The Monarchs will face either Appalachian State or Marshall in the conference final scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
With this result, Old Dominion continues its pursuit of another Sun Belt Conference title.
