Old Dominion men’s tennis falls to Wake Forest in NCAA second round

Old Dominion University men’s tennis lost to Wake Forest University by a score of 4-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on May 2.

The match marked the end of Old Dominion’s season, which concluded with a record of 21-7 and included their fourth consecutive Sun Belt Championship. The Monarchs had advanced after winning their first NCAA Tournament match in 19 years with a victory over Gardner-Webb.

In doubles play, Wake Forest’s Luca Pow and Aryan Shah defeated Zech Hamrouni and Felix Obermair, while Dhaksineswar Suresh Ekambaram and Andrew Delgado won against Thomas Nelson and Jean-Karim Olivier de Sardan. The third doubles match was unfinished when Adam Majchrzak and Piet Steveker trailed Mees Rottgering and Kacper Szumkowiak.

Wake Forest continued its strong performance in singles matches. Mees Rottgering beat Obermair, Luca Pow defeated Steveker, and Joaquin Guilleme clinched the team victory by overcoming Aryan Saleh. Three singles matches were suspended before completion: Majchrzak versus Suresh Ekambaram (4-6, 3-3), Olivier de Sardan versus Charlie Robertson (1-6, 6-2), and Hamrouni versus Shah (6-7 [3-7], 1-1).

The result concludes Old Dominion’s postseason run but reflects a successful year for the program.
