Old Dominion University lost to Georgia State on April 25 in a Sun Belt Conference baseball game after falling behind early. The Panthers scored four runs in the second inning and maintained their lead throughout the game, ending with a 10-4 victory over the Monarchs.
The outcome matters for both teams as they are now tied at 9-11 in conference play, impacting their positions within the Sun Belt standings. Early scoring by Georgia State set the tone, with key hits from John Beverley and Cole Griffith helping build an early advantage.
Georgia State added two more runs in the third inning, pushing their lead to 6-0. Old Dominion broke up the shutout bid in the fifth when Maverick Stallings doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Felton. However, Georgia State responded quickly with two runs of their own in the bottom half of that inning.
In the eighth inning, Georgia State increased its lead to 10-1 before Old Dominion found late offense. Zach Leite and Tyler Zedalis walked and scored during a rally that included RBI hits from Stallings and Brody Connors. Despite this effort, Old Dominion could not close the gap further as Grayson Sparr grounded into a double play to end their chances.
Leite finished with two hits and one run while Stallings contributed two hits, including an RBI double and two runs scored. Pitcher JJ Gatti took his fourth loss of the season after allowing six runs—four earned—in three innings pitched.
The teams will meet again for Sunday’s rubber match scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at GSU Baseball Complex.
