Old Dominion University’s women’s tennis team will face the University of Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, according to an April 30 announcement. The match is scheduled for Friday, May 1 at Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.

The contest marks a significant moment for Old Dominion as it continues its strong run in collegiate tennis. The Monarchs are ranked #60 and recently secured their sixth consecutive conference championship, including four straight titles in the Sun Belt Conference. During their latest tournament run, they conceded only one point overall. Kira Matushkina, currently ranked #103 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), clinched the championship victory for Old Dominion on court one.

Old Dominion enters this matchup with a season record of 13-5 and riding a four-match winning streak. Their opponent, Tennessee, holds a #17 ranking and stands at 13-9 after losing to Louisiana State University in last weekend’s Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament. This year marks Tennessee’s thirty-third appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Three Volunteers singles players—Katrina Scott (#10), Leyla Britez Risso (#40), and Vanesa Suarez (#84)—are nationally ranked by ITA. In doubles competition, Britez Risso and Catherine Aulia are ranked #19; Francesca Mattioli and Suarez are #36; while Mattioli and Maeve Thornton hold the #59 spot nationally.

Scott earned SEC First Team honors while Britez Risso was named to the Second Team All-SEC this season.

This will be Old Dominion’s seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Monarchs have advanced past the first round four times between 2021 and 2024 but fell to Florida Atlantic University last year by a score of 4-1.
