Old Dominion University men’s tennis team won its first NCAA Tournament match since 2007, defeating Gardner-Webb 4-0 on May 1 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The victory allows the Monarchs to advance to the second round of tournament play.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for the program. The last time Old Dominion won an NCAA tournament match was in 2007, when current women’s tennis head coach Dominic Manilla was a member of the team.
“What a milestone for our program,” Head Coach Dominik Mueller said. “Only the second time our program wins an NCAA match and first time during my tenure. And how we did was 100% what we did all season long. The moment didn’t get too big for our guys. Very proud of them and excited to play the defending champions and number one overall seed tomorrow.”
In doubles play, Thomas Nelson and Jean-Karim Olivier De Sardan secured a win on court one with a score of 6-2 over Kaua Cressoni and Boyd Schreiber. Felix Obermair and Zech Hamrouni clinched another doubles victory on court three, defeating Noah Zeiger and Alexander Bergeron by a score of 6-3.
In singles matches, Piet Steveker recorded ODU’s first singles win by beating Johan Van Wijk 6-4, 6-0 on court three. Zech Hamrouni followed with a win over Graham Bourne (6-2, 7-6 [7-4]) on court five before Adam Majchrzak clinched the overall victory by defeating Alexandre Bergeron (6-4, 6-4) on court one.
With this result, Old Dominion advances to face either Wake Forest or Navy in the next round scheduled for Saturday, May 2 at 5 p.m.
