Old Dominion University announced on April 15 that its football coaching staff now includes a unique family connection, with Kody Cook serving as offensive coordinator and his father-in-law, Michael Smith, joining as wide receivers coach.
The relationship between Cook and Smith stands out in college sports, where it is rare for a son-in-law to be the direct supervisor of his father-in-law. Both coaches said they view their working relationship as one built on mutual respect and collaboration rather than hierarchy.
Cook was promoted earlier this year after previously coaching ODU’s wide receivers. Smith brings 27 years of experience as an assistant coach at several programs, including Kansas State—where he was once an All-American—and Arkansas. Their connection began when Smith recruited Cook out of junior college before eventually becoming family through marriage. “A lot of people kind of like cringe because they think of in-laws and all of the stereotypes that come with that,” Cook said. “But we have a very different relationship. A very different kind of relationship.”
Smith reflected on their long-standing bond: “My relationship with Kody is unique,” he said. “I took a job at the University of Arkansas as we were recruiting him, but we never lost touch.” The two later became family when Cook married Smith’s daughter Kylie in 2020.
Head Coach Ricky Rahne welcomed Smith to the team, saying: “Michael did a phenomenal job at McNeese State. He has continually mentored productive units and is an elite recruiter. His relationship with Kody is fantastic. Our entire offensive staff is working so well together.” Last season under Cook’s guidance, ODU ranked fifth nationally in average pass reception yards.
Both coaches are preparing for ODU’s Priority Charity Bowl Spring Game scheduled for Saturday, April 18 at 2 p.m., which will give fans their first look since the team’s Cure Bowl victory capped off a successful season.
