Occoquan Road between Horner Road and Old Bridge Road in Woodbridge will be closed to through traffic from 9 p.m. Friday, March 13, until 5 a.m. Monday, March 16, as steel beams are installed for the widened southbound Interstate 95 bridge over Occoquan Road. The closure is part of the ongoing I-95 and Route 123 interchange improvements project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The closure will allow construction crews to safely install new steel beams on the bridge. Access will remain available for those needing to reach properties along Occoquan Road, but travel beyond the overpass in either direction will not be possible during this period. Through traffic will be detoured via Horner Road, Route 123 (Gordon Boulevard), and Old Bridge Road back to Occoquan Road.
The I-95 and Route 123 interchange improvements include replacing the northbound Route 123 loop ramp to southbound I-95 with a signalized left-turn ramp, widening the southbound Route 123 ramp from one lane to two lanes, moving the Express Lanes ramp intersection slightly south, realigning ramps between I-95 and Route 123, adding a shared-use path along northbound Route 123 from Annapolis Way to Devil’s Reach Road, and widening as well as replacing beams and deck of the southbound I-95 bridge over Occoquan Road. Construction on southbound I-95—including work on this bridge—is scheduled for completion in late 2027; full completion of all interchange improvements is expected by late 2028.
Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are advised to use caution when traveling through active work zones. “Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions,” said officials from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
