Construction work is set to commence on March 3 along North Main Street (Route 11) in Lexington, focusing on pedestrian-access improvements. The project will see the installation of new sidewalks and bicycle lanes, which will replace on-street parking along a 0.7-mile stretch between Massie Street and Hook Lane.
The construction plan includes temporary traffic restrictions with flagger traffic control for motorists and continuous sidewalk closures to ensure pedestrian safety during the process. The project aims to add about 2,000 feet of new sidewalk connecting to existing pathways on the eastern side of the road. Bicycle lanes, four feet wide, will be available in both directions throughout the project’s length. Initial work involves underground utility adjustments followed by milling, paving, and restriping.
In November 2024, the Virginia Department of Transportation awarded a $3,024,170 contract to North Construction Inc., based in Ashburn, Virginia. The completion of this project is anticipated by August 2025. Updates regarding construction and traffic will be available on the VDOT project page.
