Passing zones will be eliminated on the Robert O. Norris, Jr., Bridge over the Rappahannock River between Lancaster and Middlesex counties starting this weekend, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
Crews will mark the pavement with a double yellow line between the bridge approaches in Middlesex and Lancaster counties, indicating that passing is no longer allowed. The change aims to encourage safe travel at the posted speed limit of 45 mph. VDOT will monitor traffic conditions and may adjust the pattern if necessary in the future.
“No decision has been made on the traffic pattern on the replacement bridge. Construction will begin on a replacement Norris Bridge in 2028,” VDOT stated.
The marking work is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., during which time the bridge will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles. Work crews are prepared to grant immediate access to any emergency responders needing to cross during these hours.
“Closing the bridge will avoid travelers getting wet paint on the exterior of their car. This has occurred during past pavement marking operations on the bridge due to the 11-foot-wide travel lane width. It will also prevent drivers from damaging freshly painted lines and extending the time needed to complete the work,” VDOT explained.
Message boards at both ends of Norris Bridge will notify travelers about Saturday’s two-hour closure and, after completion of work, inform them that passing is prohibited.
