Route 3 travelers experienced delays during the evening rush hour on August 18, 2025, as crews performed emergency work on the Robert O. Norris Bridge. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) responded to a citizen notification by removing an existing strip of steel edge forming under the bridge. This action was taken to protect watercraft passing below.
The eastbound lane closure began at 3:30 p.m., with a pilot truck guiding vehicles through the work zone one direction at a time. Flaggers were stationed at both ends of the bridge to manage traffic flow while the pilot truck led vehicles from the opposite direction.
According to VDOT, “Norris Bridge is currently safe for travel. The removal of the steel edge forming does not affect the structural capacity of Norris Bridge. This work is to ensure the continued safety of marine watercraft on the Rappahannock River.”
The Norris Bridge connects Middlesex and Lancaster counties over the Rappahannock River, serving as a key route for local traffic. Message boards were placed at both approaches to inform drivers about ongoing work and potential delays.
By 5:45 p.m., VDOT announced that the Route 3 eastbound lane was reopened and work was complete.
