Norfolk Public Library’s Richard A. Tucker Memorial Library will host its fifth annual Juneteenth Celebration on June 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to a June 3 announcement. The event at 2350 Berkley Avenue Extension will feature music, food, and all-day entertainment including performances by the TFC Band, MLC Project, Becky Livas, cultural exhibits, Buffalo Soldiers presentations, youth activities and more.
The day of celebration begins with Stop the Violence’s fourth annual Juneteenth Parade. The parade steps off at 10 a.m. from the Diggs Town Rental Office at 1619 Vernon Drive and concludes at Richard A. Tucker Memorial Library.
Additional Juneteenth programs are scheduled across several library branches on June 17 and June 18. These include a Juneteenth Read-In at Blyden Branch on June 17 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.; Celebration Bags available all day on June 18 at Downtown Branch at Slover; “Juneteenth: African American Communities in Virginia and Beyond” on June 18 from 10 a.m. to noon also at Downtown Branch; Movie Night on June 18 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch; Collage Party on June 18 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.; and “A Juneteenth Declaration” on June 18 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., both held at Park Place Branch.
Norfolk supports cultural institutions such as the Virginia Opera and the Chrysler Museum of Art, according to the city’s facts page. The city features notable landmarks including the USS Wisconsin battleship and Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center for ocean-going vessels, as detailed by the city’s facts page.
