The Norfolk Community Services Board announced on May 1 that it will host two community events to mark National Mental Health Awareness Month. The board, which provides mental health, substance use, homeless services and developmental services to more than 6,000 residents each year, aims to reduce stigma and encourage open conversations about mental wellness.
Mental Health Awareness Month is recognized nationally as a time to highlight the importance of mental health and support systems. As the city’s primary provider of related services, Norfolk CSB invites residents to participate in activities designed to foster wellness and connection.
The first event is a free community performance of Every Brilliant Thing on Wednesday, May 13 at Booker T. Washington High School Theatre. This event is presented by Norfolk CSB Prevention Services in partnership with Virginia Stage Company and Booker T. Washington Academy of the Arts. It features a special student performance by Academy theatre students, an art gallery showcasing student work, and local partners offering on-site mental health resources.
A second event titled “Mental Health Matters” will take place Friday, May 15 at Lafayette Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering educational outreach from Norfolk CSB and its partners along with games, music, arts and crafts activities for families. Food and beverages will be available at this free gathering focused on education and wellness.
Residents seeking information or support related to mental health or substance use are encouraged to contact Norfolk CSB through their website or by phone. Those experiencing a crisis can call the National Crisis Line at 988 or reach out locally via the Emergency Line provided by Norfolk CSB.
