Norfolk announces special waste collection event for residents on May 9

The City of Norfolk announced on Apr. 20 that it will hold the “Norfolk Recycles Day” Special Waste Collection Event on Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to noon at Azalea Baptist Church, located at 3314 E. Little Creek Road.

The event gives residents an opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste and electronics while supporting community clean-up efforts. It also encourages donations for local food pantries and pet care centers.

According to the city, residents can drive through and drop off items such as paint, batteries, pesticides, cooking and automotive oils, propane tanks, and more free of charge. Proof of residency may be required. Personal documents can be shredded securely onsite, and used or expired child safety seats can be recycled during the event.

Volunteers will collect canned goods for the PrimePlus Senior Center Food Pantry as well as unopened pet food for the Norfolk Animal Care Center Pet Pantry. More information about accepted items is available at www.norfolk.gov/swce or www.norfolk.gov/KNB.

Partners providing services include SPSA Norfolk, Goodwill Hampton Roads, Shred-It, AAA Tidewater Virginia, Drive Safe Hampton Roads and City of Norfolk Waste Management. Volunteers from Keep Norfolk Beautiful and other local organizations will assist onsite.

Norfolk encompasses about 235,000 residents according to the official facts page. The city extends across seven miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline with a total shoreline measuring 144 miles according to city data. Its government features a mayor along with seven council members who set policy according to its official government page.

Norfolk supports cultural institutions such as the Virginia Opera and Chrysler Museum of Art as detailed by city officials, features attractions like the USS Wisconsin battleship and Half Moone Cruise Center according to its facts page, and has a historic seal featuring ship imagery reflecting its port heritage as per city history records.
