The City of Norfolk announced on Apr. 29 the start of its 15th Annual Norfolk Bike Month, inviting residents to participate in cycling activities throughout May. The event features rides on local trails such as the Northside Park Mountain Bike Trail and the Elizabeth River Trail, as well as gatherings like the Hampton Roads Bike Expo, Bike to Work Day, and the Glow Ride.

Bike Month aims to promote safe and active transportation options for people of all abilities. According to city officials, nearly 60 miles of dedicated bike lanes, shared lanes, and trails are available in Norfolk. These facilities continue to expand through projects like the Granby Street Bike Lane project and planned extensions along Ocean View Avenue. A new study is also underway to improve bike lanes and pedestrian access along East Indian River Road and Campostella Road.

City leaders emphasize safety during this month’s activities due to a national increase in severe crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians. They urge drivers to share the road by giving cyclists at least three feet when passing or changing lanes when possible. Bicycles are permitted on all city streets regardless of designated bike lanes. Helmets are required for riders aged 14 years or younger.

Norfolk is home to about 235,000 residents according to its official facts page. The city government includes a mayor and seven council members who set policy according to its official government page. Norfolk supports cultural institutions such as the Virginia Opera and Chrysler Museum of Art as detailed on its facts page, features landmarks like the USS Wisconsin battleship according to city information, extends across seven miles of Chesapeake Bay shoreline per official records, and has a historic seal featuring ships that reflect its port heritage as described by city history sources.

Bike Month is sponsored by Lime in partnership with organizations including Downtown Norfolk Council, Hampton Roads Transit, goCommute, Bike Norfolk, Elizabeth River Trail, and community partners. More information about biking resources can be found at www.norfolk.gov/BikeMonth.
