The No. 23 Virginia softball team will finish its regular season with a road game against Liberty on April 28. The Cavaliers, who hold a record of 36-12, are set to play the Flames, who are currently at 23-26.

This matchup is significant as it marks the final opportunity for Virginia to build momentum before postseason play. Virginia enters this contest after sweeping NC State, which secured their fifth series win out of eight in Atlantic Coast Conference play this season. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 28 in the RPI and have faced tough competition with nineteen games against teams ranked in the RPI top fifty.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Taylor Smith recently threw her first career no-hitter and solo shutout during a series-clinching win over NC State, contributing to Virginia’s total of eleven shutouts this year. Alex Call hit her first career grand slam last Saturday—only the second grand slam by a Virginia player this season.

Macee Eaton took sole possession of second place on Virginia’s single-season runs batted in (RBI) list with fifty-nine RBIs so far this year; she also holds both top spots after tallying sixty-three RBIs last year. Bella Cabral added two home runs over the weekend, bringing her season total to thirteen and tying her for sixth all-time in home runs at Virginia with twenty-nine.

Jade Hylton continues to lead off strong, hitting her fifty-second career home run Sunday against NC State; she ranks third all-time for career RBIs at Virginia with one hundred forty-nine, while Eaton and Cabral also rank among the top ten in that category. Eaton stands seventh in batting average (.453), RBI (59), and slugging percentage (.793) within the conference.

Pitchers Courtney Layne and Eden Bigham each have twelve wins this season for a combined twenty-four victories from these two players alone. As a team, Virginia has hit sixty home runs so far—second most ever for a single season behind last year’s sixty-nine—and leads league pitching categories including earned run average (3.06), fewest hits allowed per seven innings (5.85), WHIP (1.30), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.14). Freshman Jaiden Griffith is currently third toughest batter to strike out in league play while junior Macee Eaton is sixth.
