No. 10 Virginia Tech lost to Georgia Tech, 9-7, in the series finale on April 19 at Tech Softball Park.
The loss came despite a late rally by the Hokies, who hit three home runs during the game and threatened to tie the score in the seventh inning. The defeat puts Virginia Tech at a record of 38-8 overall and 12-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
The game began with both teams exchanging home runs through the first three innings. Georgia Tech took an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning before Michelle Chatfield responded for Virginia Tech with a solo shot. After another Yellow Jackets home run and one from Jordan Lynch for the Hokies, Georgia Tech led 4-2 after three innings.
Georgia Tech extended its lead with three more runs in the fourth inning and two additional runs in the fifth. Addison Foster contributed an RBI triple for Virginia Tech, but by that point, Georgia Tech was ahead by six runs. In later innings, Chatfield hit a two-RBI single to narrow the gap to four runs.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Gaby Mizelle hit her seventh home run of the season to make it a two-run game. The Hokies managed to get runners on first and second base but could not complete their comeback attempt.
Virginia Tech is now 35-30 all-time against Georgia Tech and has been outhit by its opponent only five times this season. Chatfield led all Hokies players with two hits and three RBIs while hitting her ninth home run of the year; Lynch recorded her team-leading fifteenth homer; Annika Rohs tied a single-game record with four walks; Nora Abromavage extended her reached-base streak to sixteen games; Emma Mazzarone’s pitching record moved to eleven wins and four losses.
Virginia Tech will return home for its next game against Liberty on Wednesday, April 22 at 6 p.m., which will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
