Tonight, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced scheduled nighttime ramp closures affecting southbound I-495 at the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) and Georgetown Pike interchanges in McLean. The closures will take place on June 2 and 3.
On Monday night, June 2, from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, the ramps from southbound I-495 to GWMP Exit 43 and Georgetown Pike Exit 44 will be closed. During this time, motorists are advised to detour by continuing southbound on I-495 to northbound Route 123 Exit 46B, then proceed to the northbound I-495 general purpose lanes towards Georgetown Pike and GWMP.
In addition to these closures, a single lane closure will be implemented on the southbound I-495 collector road from just after the American Legion Bridge to the GWMP bridges. This lane reduction is expected to last from Tuesday morning, June 3, through approximately Friday, June 20, for construction work related to an overhead sign structure. It is noted that exits to GWMP and Georgetown Pike will not be affected by this temporary lane reduction.
On Tuesday night, June 3, further closures are scheduled from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday morning for ramps from GWMP to southbound I-495 and from Georgetown Pike to southbound I-495. These closures are necessary for crews to adjust the merge point onto southbound I-495 slightly northward.
During these periods of closure, specific detours have been arranged:
For travelers moving from GWMP to southbound I-495: they should take the exit onto northbound I-495 toward Maryland and continue north until reaching Exit 41 for Clara Barton Parkway. From there, they should stay left for westbound Clara Barton Parkway and take the exit towards Carderock before merging back onto eastbound Clara Barton Parkway leading back onto southbound I-495 toward Virginia.
For those traveling from Georgetown Pike to southbound I-495: they should exit onto southbound Balls Hill Road and turn left onto Lewinsville Road before exiting right onto southbound Rt.123/Dolley Madison Boulevard which leads them back onto the on-ramp for southbound I-495.
VDOT emphasizes that all work is dependent on weather conditions and may be rescheduled if necessary. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and anticipate potential delays while traveling through this area.
Motorists can check VA511 for real-time traffic updates or visit VDOT’s website at 495next.vdot.virginia.gov for detailed construction information.
