Lane closures for paving work on Route 208 (Courthouse Road) in Spotsylvania County near Lake Anna will now take place only at night, beginning Sunday, September 14. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced the change after travelers experienced longer than expected delays during daytime hours.
The single-lane closure will occur between Lawyers Road and the bridge over Lake Anna on Sunday and Monday nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., and Monday through Thursday nights (ending early Friday morning) from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. All lanes will remain open during the day and on weekends. During overnight hours, a flagging crew will manage one-way alternating traffic through the work zone.
VDOT revised its plan for the pavement maintenance project covering 3.7 miles of Courthouse Road after starting work on September 8 and receiving feedback from local drivers. The resurfacing is scheduled to be finished by mid-October, depending on weather conditions.
All lanes of Courthouse Road are currently open and will stay open through the weekend until lane closures resume at 7 p.m. Sunday, September 14.
“Thank you to each person who contacted us to express how this work zone affected their travel,” said VDOT Fredericksburg Resident Engineer Kyle Bates, P.E. “We listened, and prioritized keeping Courthouse Road drivers on time for work, school, and medical appointments during peak travel times. And, we will still strengthen the pavement on a primary road. Our mission requires us to keep the state road network in good condition, but we have to balance that against the quality of life of people using the road. We are grateful for the community’s patience this week as we arrived at a solution.”
According to VDOT’s most recent traffic count in 2023, Courthouse Road sees an average daily volume of about 8,500 vehicles between Lawyers Road and the Louisa County-Spotsylvania County line.
