Nighttime closures are scheduled for U.S. 29/250 at the Route 601 (Old Ivy Road) overpass in Albemarle County as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) carries out bridge construction work. The closures will take place from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday, and from 10 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.

According to VDOT, these closures are necessary for the safe rehabilitation of the bridge, which was originally built in 1961 and serves about 8,000 vehicles each day. The project includes replacing the bridge deck and beams, rehabilitating the piers, and raising the structure slightly to improve vertical clearance on U.S. 29/250.

“Separate signed detours will be in place for truck and passenger vehicle traffic during each closure.”

Truck drivers traveling north will be directed to follow Interstate 64 east to Exit 124, continue west on U.S. 250 (Richmond Road), then take the ramp for U.S. 29 north (Emmet Street/Seminole Trail). Passenger vehicles and local traffic heading north will use U.S. 250 Business (Ivy Road) and Emmet Street. To reach destinations south of the closure, drivers should use the U.S. 29/250 west exit at Route 601 (Old Ivy Road), turn left onto eastbound U.S. 250 Business, then immediately right to continue on U.S. 29/250.

All work is weather dependent, and drivers are advised to exercise caution in the area and observe all posted detour signs.

The Culpeper District overseen by VDOT covers Albemarle County along with eight other counties in central Virginia; Charlottesville city maintains its own roads independently.
