The Virginia Department of Transportation announced upcoming nighttime closures on Fairfax County Parkway for the installation of beams for the new Popes Head Road overpass. These closures are part of the Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange project. The closures are scheduled for the nights of April 30, May 1, and May 5, pending weather conditions.
Northbound Fairfax County Parkway will be closed between Burke Centre Parkway and Braddock Road from 10 p.m. on April 30 to 4:30 a.m. on May 1, and again from 10 p.m. on May 1 to 4:30 a.m. on May 2. Southbound Fairfax County Parkway will see lane closures and brief traffic stoppages during this time. Drivers on northbound Fairfax County Parkway needing access to certain local roads will be detoured via Burke Centre Parkway and Route 123.
On May 5, from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. the following day, southbound Fairfax County Parkway will be closed to all traffic from Braddock Road to Popes Head Road, with detours in place via Braddock Road, Route 123, and Burke Centre Parkway. Northbound Fairfax County Parkway will remain open during these periods.
The project aims to replace the traffic signals at the Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road intersection with an interchange featuring triple roundabouts. This will allow traffic to flow freely via two new bridges over Fairfax County Parkway. Additional developments include part of the future Shirley Gate Road extension, a shared-use path linking various trails, trail reconstruction, a sidewalk installation, and an extension of Ladues End Lane to a new roundabout.
Completion of this project is expected in late 2026. Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution in active work zones. Travel information can be accessed online or via the 511Virginia app.
