Fairfax County Parkway will experience nighttime closures from April 30 to May 5 for beam installation at the upcoming Popes Head Road overpass. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced these closures as part of the interchange project for Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road.
From 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. on April 30 and May 1, northbound lanes between Burke Centre Parkway and Braddock Road will be closed, with traffic detoured via Burke Centre Parkway, Route 123 (Ox Road), and Braddock Road. Southbound lanes will experience partial closures and intermittent stoppages approaching Popes Head Road. Meanwhile, access to Popes Head Road from southbound Fairfax County Parkway will continue without disruption.
On May 5, from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. the following morning, southbound lanes from Braddock Road to Popes Head Road will close, with traffic routed via Braddock Road, Route 123, and Burke Centre Parkway. Northbound lanes will remain open.
Drivers should anticipate significant delays and are encouraged to seek alternative routes.
VDOT’s ongoing project at the Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange involves replacing the existing signal with triple roundabouts and two bridges facilitating improved traffic flow. Planned additions include extending Shirley Gate Road, constructing a shared-use path connecting to Patriot Park, reconstructing the Fairfax County Parkway Trail, and extending Ladues End Lane.
The project is projected to conclude by late 2026.
Authorities so advised drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians to exercise caution in active work zones and remain aware of changing traffic patterns. Further information is available through VDOT’s online platforms or by calling 511.
“Weather permitting, Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) will have nighttime closures between Burke Centre Parkway (Route 643) and Braddock Road (Route 620) Wednesday night, April 30; Thursday night, May 1; and Monday night, May 5 to install beams for the future Popes Head Road (Route 654) overpass as part of the Fairfax County Parkway and Popes Head Road interchange project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.”
