Construction has started on the improvements at the northern intersection of Newington Road (Route 877) and Cinder Bed Road (Route 754), as announced by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
These efforts are focused on enhancing safety and operations for drivers, as well as improving pedestrian safety and mobility. The plans include the installation of a traffic signal with flashing yellow arrows for northbound traffic on Newington Road towards the Gunston Industrial Park and southbound traffic on Newington Road towards Cinder Bed Road. Additionally, three new crosswalks will be added along with Accessible Pedestrian Signals, and existing crosswalks will be upgraded with these signals too. Curb ramps will be upgraded to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
During the construction period, lane closures may occur on weekdays and overnight outside of peak travel hours near the intersection. However, the existing crosswalk will remain accessible to pedestrians.
The project, with a budget of $620,000, is funded by Fairfax County and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), and is projected to conclude by late 2025.
