Construction will begin on Monday, January 12, for a new traffic signal at the intersection of Route 340 (East Side Highway) and Route 649 (Island Ford Road / Berrytown Road) in Rockingham County. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will replace the current flashing light with a full traffic signal that will coordinate with the nearby Norfolk Southern railway crossing.

According to VDOT, “When the new signal is activated in spring 2026, drivers approaching the intersection on Island Ford Road will stop for red lights prior to the railway crossing. There will be no right turn on red for these drivers or for those approaching the intersection on southbound Route 340.”

The agency added, “Advance-warning signs with flashing lights on Route 340 will alert motorists of the traffic signal. Activated signs will be installed on Route 340 approaches to the traffic signal to prohibit turns across the railroad when a train is approaching the railway crossing. During these times, no turns will be permitted from or onto Island Ford Road.”

VDOT stated that “The new signal is designed to reduce crashes and enhance safety at the intersection.” The project has an estimated cost of $875,000, funded mainly through VDOT safety improvement funds. All work depends on weather conditions.

For travel information and alerts, drivers can dial 511, visit the Virginia 511 website or use its mobile app. VDOT also provides customer service around-the-clock for roadway users needing assistance or wishing to report issues.

VDOT is responsible for planning, building and maintaining transportation infrastructure such as roads, bridges and tunnels throughout Virginia. It manages one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the United States and offers services including traffic management and public access to road condition data through resources like Virginia 511 (official website). The department’s headquarters are located in Richmond.

Updates about this project and other news can be found on VDOT’s social media channels and website.
