A new traffic signal is set to become operational at the intersection of Route 2 (Tidewater Trail) and Glendas Way/Briarwood Lane in Spotsylvania County. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the signal will begin flashing on Tuesday, September 2, as a warning for drivers. Full color operation is scheduled to start early Thursday, September 4.

The new signal aims to manage traffic flow for vehicles entering and exiting neighborhoods and businesses near Tidewater Trail. VDOT has installed message boards this week to inform motorists about the upcoming changes.

In addition to the new traffic light, crews have added pedestrian crossing equipment, sidewalks, accessible ramps for crosswalks, and improved drainage at the intersection. The enhancements are designed to increase safety for both drivers and pedestrians.

Pedestrians will be able to cross Glendas Way and Tidewater Trail using newly installed crossing signals that stop vehicle traffic when activated by pressing a button. “Starting on Thursday, Sept. 4, pedestrians will have dedicated time to cross Glendas Way and Tidewater Trail when a person activates the new pedestrian crossing signal equipment. When a pedestrian presses the button to cross the street, the signal will stop traffic. Pedestrians should wait to receive direction from the signal equipment to walk across Glendas Way or Tidewater Trail,” VDOT stated in its announcement.

Motorists are reminded they must yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.

Previously, a rectangular rapid flashing beacon was used for pedestrian crossings at this location. With installation of the new traffic light system, these beacons will be deactivated and covered starting Tuesday as soon as the new light begins flashing. The existing warning signs and open crosswalk will remain until full operation starts on Thursday; after which beacon equipment will be removed.

Funding for this project comes from VDOT Safety and Operational Improvement funds allocated by Spotsylvania County.
